FED:Managers need help managing mental illness
Charity Sane Australia says a national survey paints an unsatisfactory picture on how
mental illness is managed in the workplace.
The survey reveals 95 per cent of the 520 respondents think employers and managers
need education on mental illness and how to manage its effects in the workplace.
More than 60 per cent say their mental illness hasn't been a barrier when finding a
job, but the majority say no support's been provided to them once they're in the workplace.

QLD:Accused teen had no past at burnt school
By Kym Agius
BRISBANE, April 28 AAP - The mother of a teenager charged with setting a school fire
in Brisbane says he never attended the school and has not been in trouble before.
The blaze at Wavell Heights State School in Chermside started about 4am (AEST) on Wednesday
and destroyed an entire wing of the school in Brisbane's north.
Joshua Ross Poole, 17, of Albany Creek, has been charged with enter premises with intent
and arson.
James Robert Thomas Gregory, 17, of Chermside, is facing the same charges and three
more - receiving tainted property, possessing an instrument used in a commission of crime
and a drug-related charge.
Gregory's mother, Belinda Medlin, told reporters outside Pine Rivers Magistrates Court
she was very surprised he was accused of the crimes and he had never been in trouble before.
Asked if the accusations were a mother's worst nightmare she said, "Yes, it really is."
She said she did not know the co-accused or how long the pair had been friends.
Ms Medlin said Gregory had not attended the school and he lived at home and worked
full-time as a labourer.
"We'll take it day by day and try to understand," Ms Medlin said.
Magistrate Stephen Guttridge granted bail to both teenagers and adjourned the matter
to the Brisbane Magistrates Court on May 12.
Two 16-year-old juveniles charged over the fire were due to appear in the Brisbane
Children's Court on Thursday to be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice
Act.

Vic: Victims' group calls for priests to be defrocked
MELBOURNE, April 22 AAP - A church-related victims' group is calling on the Vatican
to defrock about 100 Melbourne priests implicated in sexual abuse claims which have been
substantiated by church investigations.
The Melbourne Victims' Collective, a group of 27 primary and secondary alleged sex
abuse victims, wants the priests stripped of their titles and privileges.
A Fairfax newspaper (The Age) reported on Thursday that almost 300 sexual abuse allegations
had been substantiated in Melbourne by the Catholic church since 1996, but only one priest
had been defrocked.
"We are shocked to hear that the Melbourne Catholic Church has official knowledge of
these sexual abuses, including pedophilia, through the last 14 years of their internal
complaints process and still allows offending priests to retain their title and remain
in the Melbourne church community," Melbourne Victims' Collective (MCV) spokesperson Helen
Last said in a statement.
"The time for covering this up must end."
Ms Last said the Melbourne system set up in 1996 protected the church from negative
publicity and left victims and their families struggling to live normal lives.
She told AAP the group was forming a petition to be handed to the Vatican's representative
in Australia, which called for the 100 perpetrators to be assessed for the fast-tracking
of the defrocking process.
Ms Last said the group was also calling on the Vatican to send a delegate to Melbourne,
as it has to Ireland, to investigate the mismanagement of victims' complaints.
She said without stripping those clergy of their roles and responsibilities, they could
continue to live and work in the church community.
"It helps them groom further victims," she told AAP.
Church hierarchy was unavailable for comment.

Fed: No need for new state in NQ: Rudd
CAIRNS, Dec 9 AAP - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has dismissed calls for the establishment
of a new state in northern Queensland, saying Australia had enough governments.
Historian Geoffrey Blainey last month said population increases in north Queensland
meant it would be "absurd" for a new state not to be established there.
"The last big change to the (Australian) map was made in 1859 (Queensland) and no one
then knew about the resources available," Prof Blainey said.
"This country will look absurd if we have the same states in the future."
However, Mr Rudd said there was no need for a new state.
"I think we've got enough states around Australia," he told ABC Radio in Townsville.
"I think if you asked all Australians are they overgoverned or undergoverned, very
few of them would say they were undergoverned."

Fed: Fair Work Australia could be unconstitutional: Labor
CANBERRA, April 26 AAP - Labor's plan to merge the Australian Industrial Relations
Commission and other agencies with a new workplace umpire is a step backwards and may
be unconstitutional, a business group says.
The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) said it opposed the the proposal
to scrap the commission, the Office of the Employment Advocate and the Office of Workplace
Services and replace them with a new agency called Fair Work Australia.
The group's chief executive, Peter Hendy, today questioned the legality of Fair Work
Australia, saying the proposal was on "shaky ground".
"They're going to give this agency tribunal powers, they're going to give it policing
powers and they're going to give it court powers," he told reporters.
"And you can't actually do that under the federal constitution."
Labor's proposed IR system would erode the economic benefits of enterprise bargaining
and return the nation to centralised wage-fixing, Mr Hendy said.
"It's actually bad policy. It's actually giving more powers to a centralised super
agency and in that respect it's doing the exact opposite of the trend we've had in the
last 13 years of moving to enterprise-based bargaining," he said.
"We've moved away from a centralised wage fixing system to one where decisions are
made by enterprises with employees and employers working together.
"And they're moving back to the future of the old centralised wage-fixing system."
Reintroducing centralised wage fixing would increase the power and influence of union
bosses, he said.

A passenger on board a plane at the centre of a bomb scare in Sydney last night says
the response to the scare was chaotic and could have been better organised.
MARK SINGLETON was one of 102 passengers evacuated from the Pacific Blue 737 from Fiji.
He's told Nine's Today show he thought the plane would explode while passengers were
cooped up in a bus on the tarmac.
He says everyone was on the bus facing the plane about 100 metres away .. and people
were using their mobile phones against orders.
He says no one was telling them not to .. and he thought if a bomb was going to be
detonated .. that would be when it was going to happen.
Mr SINGLETON says passengers were given false excuses about why the plane was delayed
on the tarmac when it was clearly surrounded by emergency crews.
And he says instead of being taken off the plane as quickly as possible .. they were
left in their seats for 45 minutes.
The drama unfolded after an anonymous caller warned there was a suspicious package
on the plane .. which landed at Sydney airport from Fiji about 5.45pm (AEST).

DAOU Systems, Inc. Reports Financial Results For Second Quarter 2000; Company In Acquisition Talks With Perot Systems Corporation.
Business Editors and Health/Medical Writers
SAN DIEGO--(BW HealthWire)--Aug. 10, 2000
Results Include Restructuring Charge Related To Consolidation
And Resizing Of Company's Operations
DAOU Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: DAOU) today reported financial results for the second quarter and first six months of 2000. The Company also announced that it is considering strategic alternatives designed to maximize shareholder value, and is currently holding discussions with Perot Systems Corporation (NYSE: PER) regarding the possible sale of the Company. Although no definitive agreement has been signed and a price has not been agreed upon, the price currently being discussed would not be at a substantial premium over the current market price. There can be no assurance that an agreement regarding the sale of the Company will be reached as a result of the current discussions at such a price or any price, or that an agreement will be reached with any other company at all.
For the quarter ended June 30, 2000, DAOU reported revenue of $16,127,000 and a net loss to common shareholders of $2,768,000, or $.16 per common share, excluding restructuring charges of $827,000, or $.05 per share, related to recent actions by the Company to further consolidate its operations and reduce operating expenses primarily through a reduction in headcount. Including the restructuring charge, DAOU reported a net loss of $.20 per common share, for the second quarter of 2000. This compares to a net loss of $4,650,000, or $.26 per common share on revenue of $17,575,000 for the first quarter of 2000, and to net income of $60,000, or breakeven per common share, on revenue of $27,051,000 for the second quarter of 1999. Second quarter 1999 included approximately $2 million in revenue from discontinued businesses and a contract the Company chose to terminate in early 1999.
DAOU's second quarter 2000 revenues reflect a continued lag in the demand for the Company's core health care information technology (IT) services. Gross margin for the second quarter of 2000 improved to 19% from 9% in the first quarter of 2000. Gross margin in the second quarter of 1999 was 29%. Total operating expenses, excluding the restructuring charge, decreased to $5,829,000 for the second quarter of 2000, compared to $6,254,000 in the first quarter of 2000 and from $7,739,000 in the second quarter of 1999. The decrease in operating expenses was due primarily to the consolidation of certain selling, general and administrative functions, as well as further consolidation of operating facilities.
As of June 30, 2000, cash and short-term investments increased slightly to $12,886,000, as compared to $12,701,000 at March 31, 2000, due to improved collection efforts and the realization of contract work in process. Accounts receivable decreased to $14,692,000 from $16,857,000 at the end of the first quarter of 2000, and from $21,912,000 at the end of 1999. Days sales outstanding (DSOs) declined to 95 days from 101 days at the end of the first quarter of 2000. Contract work in progress decreased to $1,456,000 from $3,743,000 at March 31, 2000 and from $8,606,000 at the end of the second quarter last year.
"Second quarter 2000 revenues were impacted by continued weak market demand for our core health care IT services, due primarily to budgets constrained by large Y2K expenditures in 1999, managed care cost pressures, the cumulative effect of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997, slower than expected demand for HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) services, and the uncertain future of real integration of health care services," stated Larry D. Grandia, President and Chief Executive Officer of DAOU Systems, Inc. "Given our current level of revenues, we have taken additional steps to further reduce our costs. Among these, we have further consolidated operations and administrative functions in San Diego, eliminated additional layers of management, and reduced our headcount.
"As a result of the changes we have made to our cost structure, we approached profitability at the end of the quarter, and expect that operating costs will continue to be lower in the third quarter as we receive the full benefit of our consolidation efforts in the second half of the year. Among the changes made, we consolidated all subsidiary-level accounting and human resource functions throughout the organization. In addition, the changes made in our management structure have resulted in a leaner cost structure, including a reduction in our management-to-employee ratio.
"While our current pace of business and our backlog are soft in our core health care IT business," stated Grandia, "we continue to expect the health care markets to improve and we are responding actively to increased opportunities in the marketplace to build our pipeline of health care IT business. In the e-commerce area, while we have built a significant pipeline of potential business for our Enosus Internet subsidiary, Enosus is only beginning to convert that pipeline into revenues sufficient to generate a profit. We expect to see that revenue stream grow as Enosus signs additional contracts.
"The steps we have taken to consolidate operations and reduce our employee related costs were necessary in light of our current level of business," Grandia said. "While they come with a short-term cost, we believe they will better position DAOU to achieve its objectives of profitability and growth. We have been, and continue to be, aggressive about resizing all facets of our business, and remain committed to generating a profit by keeping our costs in line with our current, sustainable revenue stream. With many of these cost-cutting actions now behind us, we are beginning to see the benefit in our results as compared to the first quarter of this year and we expect to see further improvement in our operating results moving forward as a result of our additional consolidation and restructuring.
"As we continue to execute our business plan," added Grandia, "we also are considering alternative strategic options for maximizing shareholder value. While we are unable at this time to make more specific disclosure on our discussions with Perot Systems, a combination of our companies is among the strategic alternatives currently being discussed by DAOU."
