Police have closed off part of a Canberra suburb and locked down a local primary school
.. while they search for a suspect believed to be hiding in the area.

Officers have swooped on the south western suburb of Rivett this afternoon .. but police
will only say they are searching for a person of interest who they think is holed up in
a local home.

Superintendent MICK KILFOYLE's told ABC radio .. the Rivett primary school has been
locked down .. but there's no immediate danger.

The ACT Education Department's confirmed up to 71 students will be kept inside the
school while the police operation continues.

About a dozen police cars are in the area .. with officers wearing flak jackets searching
the streets with police dogs.

Some of the suburb's streets have been closed to traffic.
