Fed: Shergold leaves PM's dept to head social research centre

PETER SHERGOLD will leave his post as Australia's top public servant .. to head a new
social research centre at the University of NSW.

Dr SHERGOLD will join the Centre for Social Impact in February 2008 after five years
as secretary to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The CSI .. which is being funded through a 12.5 million dollar federal government grant
.. will work to strengthen Australia's not-for-profit sector .. and boost social responsibility
in the corporate sector.

UNSW vice chancellor FRED HILMER says the CSI is an extremely important initiative.



It'll be the second time Dr SHERGOLD has held a position at UNSW .. after joining the
university as a lecturer in 1972 and leaving in 1987.
