Fed: Howard confirms he will address US congress

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD will address a joint sitting of the United States Congress
during his trip to Washington next month.

Mr HOWARD officially received the invitation during a meeting with the powerful head
of the Congressional International Relations Committee, HENRY HYDE.

He will become the first Australian leader to address a joint sitting of Congress since
former Labor leader BOB HAWKE 13 years ago.

The speech also follows the address by US President BILL CLINTON to a joint sitting
of the Australian parliament during his visit to Australia in November 1996.
