Fed: Two Woomera escapees hail unmarked police bus
CANBERRA, April 2 AAP - Two asylum seekers who escaped from Woomera Detention Centrelast weekend have been caught after hailing an unmarked police bus.
South Australian police said the bus carrying police who had been helping to controlweekend protesters at Woomera picked up the pair 38km north of Port Augusta.
"They were on their way home and they got flagged down by this pair," a spokesman said.
No details were available about the two captured escapees.
About 50 people escaped from the detention centre during a protest on Friday nightwhen visiting demonstrators tore down a perimeter fence.
Twelve detainees are still at large.
Assistant Commissioner Graham Brown told the ABC the pair who flagged down the bushad no provisions with them but were in good health.
"I suspect because of the terrain and because of the warmer weather they would appreciatethe fact that it is difficult to travel over that countryside without appropriate provisions,"
he said.
"They were able to identify that very quickly."
Assistant Commissioner Brown said he expected other missing detainees would be foundon the same route.
"We've got patrols in that area," he said.
"We'll continue to maintain our surveillance along that main road.
"In previous experiences we've found they do wander out onto the main roadway."
