Fed: Payroll glitch beat the Grinch, says union

MELBOURNE, Dec 18 AAP - The Grinch didn't steal Christmas in the end, but a payrollglitch at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia might.
Staff fear their last pay before Christmas, due next Tuesday, will not be paid properlybecause of ongoing problems with new payroll software.
The Finance Sector Union (FSU) said over the past two months hundreds of bank staffhad been underpaid or had incorrect amounts deducted for tax, superannuation and directdebits.
"Being paid and knowing you have been paid correctly are basic rights and it is timethe bank got it right or scrapped this system," FSU national assistant secretary SharronCaddie said.
"At this time of year people need to know just how much money they have in their accountsand their leave entitlements in order to enjoy the holiday season.
"You sort of expect that there would be some glitches with a new system but it's gettingway beyond a joke."
Ms Caddie said it was concerning the Commonwealth bank, a major financial institutionemploying about 35,000 staff, could not get their payroll right.
"The Commonwealth Bank has succeeded where the Grinch failed in stealing a happy Christmasfrom its staff," she said.
The bank admitted there had been "a small number of teething problems" with the newpayroll system.
"We've put in place some manual processes to overcome these problems," CommonwealthBank media general manager Bryan Fitzgerald (Bryan Fitzgerald) said.
"Naturally our first concern is to ensure that our staff receive the correct remunerationon time."
Mr Fitzgerald said the bank had apologised to any staff who had been inconvenienced.
He said the next pay had been brought forward to Tuesday December 24, giving staffa full working day to bring any pay problems to the attention of management.
"If there are any problems staff are able to have them rectified," he said.
